Disciplinary actions follow attack and demolition of Radda health centre in Mirpur
The BNP and its affiliated organisations on Wednesday night dissolved three major committees in Dhaka and expelled 14 leaders at different levels over allegations of indiscipline, anti-organisational activities and unethical conduct.
The dissolved bodies are the 51-member Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP convening committee, the Dhaka Metropolitan North Jubo Dal committee and the Dhaka Metropolitan West Chhatra Dal committee.
The decisions came amid growing discussion over the September 25 attack, looting and demolition of the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1, in which several figures linked to local BNP politics have been accused of involvement.
However, none of the party statements announcing Wednesday’s decisions mentioned the Radda incident.
The BNP and its affiliated organisations cited unethical activities, breaches of organisational discipline and anti-party conduct in the expulsion notices, while the Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal said their committees were dissolved because their terms had expired.
A BNP statement signed by Assistant Office Secretary Muhammad Munir Hossain said the existing Dhaka Metropolitan North convening committee, headed by Convener Aminul Islam and Member Secretary Md Mostafa Zaman, had been dissolved.
The statement gave no reason for the decision and said a new committee would be announced soon.
In a separate statement, the BNP expelled three leaders from all party posts, including primary membership.
They are Shah Ali Thana BNP Joint Convener Khalil Chowdhury, C-Block Unit BNP General Secretary Anwar Hossain and Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP member Hafizur Rahman Shukku.
The party said the action was taken over allegations of unethical and anti-organisational activities.
The Dhaka Metropolitan North Jubo Dal committee was also dissolved for having exceeded its tenure, according to a statement signed by Joint General Secretary and office in-charge Minhajul Islam Bhuiyan. Jubo Dal President Abdul Monayem Munna and General Secretary Mohammad Nurul Islam Nayan approved the decision.
The Chhatra Dal separately dissolved its Dhaka Metropolitan West committee on the same grounds and said a new committee would be announced soon.
It also expelled five leaders over what it described as specific allegations of violating organisational discipline.
They are Dhaka Metropolitan West Chhatra Dal Vice-President Sarwar Alam Pias, Senior Joint General Secretary Md Rafiqul Islam Jinnah, Darussalam Thana Chhatra Dal Convener Iqbal Hossain Dipu, Member Secretary Omar Naim and Ward 93 Chhatra Dal Member Secretary Shanto Rahman.
Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir approved the decisions.
Two leaders of the Darussalam Thana unit of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal were expelled over allegations of activities contrary to organisational discipline. They are Convener Md Akhtar Hossain Mamun and Member Secretary Md Hafizur Rahman.
The organisation also instructed leaders and activists at all levels not to maintain organisational contact with them.
Central President SM Jilani and General Secretary Rajib Ahsan approved the decision.
Meanwhile, the Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal expelled four leaders from all organisational posts over similar allegations. They are Shah Ali Thana Sramik Dal Joint Convener Monir Hossain, Shah Ali Thana Autorickshaw Sramik Dal President Jahangir Hossain, member Huzaifa and Darussalam Thana Sramik Dal Convener Golam Rasul Parvez.
Sramik Dal President Anwar Hossain and General Secretary Nurul Islam Khan Nasim approved the expulsions.
The latest disciplinary actions came a day after the BNP expelled Mofizur Rahman Mamun, president of the party’s Ward 91 unit under Pallabi Thana in Dhaka North. The BNP said he was removed over unethical and anti-organisational activities.
Mamun, who is reportedly based in Malaysia, has been accused of controlling a local group in Mirpur through his brothers Jamil Rahman and Mashiur Rahman.
Allegations against the group include extortion, control of the garment-waste business, land grabbing and the drug trade in areas including Pallabi, Mirpur-12, Saguftha and Baunia. These are allegations and have not been established by a court.
The organisational changes have come days after the Radda health centre was attacked by more than 200 masked people, according to police and media reports.
