NCP convener demands immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible
National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam today condemned the demolition and alleged looting at a health centre in Mirpur, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved.
Nahid, who is also the opposition chief whip in parliament, made the remarks in a post on his verified Facebook page this evening.
He said the demolition of the Radda MCH-FP Centre in the middle of the night was a terrible example of how fragile the country’s law and order situation had become. The health centre had provided healthcare services to pregnant women and children and run vaccination programmes for 50 years.
“Although vandalism and looting continued at the institution throughout the night, the silent and indifferent role of the law enforcement agencies is deeply concerning. A country cannot be run this way,” he said.
He said that, even in the heart of the capital, a hospital had been demolished and occupied as if someone were grabbing a char. The incident had raised questions in the public mind about whether there was actually any government in the country.
Nahid also referred to allegations by local residents that BNP lawmaker from a reserved women’s seat Ferdousi Ahmed Misti and an influential Dhaka North BNP leader were behind the vandalism and occupation.
“Despite the alarming deterioration in the law and order situation day after day, the home minister’s virtually inactive role is a matter of shame for the entire nation,” he said.
Demanding action against those responsible, Nahid said, “Our clear demand is that every person involved in the vandalism and looting at the Radda MCH-FP Centre must be arrested immediately and brought to justice.
“At the same time, the main people behind the incident must be identified and brought under the law, and exemplary punishment must be ensured for those found guilty,” he added.
