Ducsu VP demands restoration of NTRCA-led appointments and announces mass gathering for tomorrow
Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) Vice-President Abu Shadik Kayem today warned of launching a movement "stronger than the July Uprising" if the government does not scrap its decision to allow managing committees and governing bodies to recruit teachers at private educational institutions instead of the Non-Government Teachers' Registration and Certification Authority (NTRCA).
While speaking at a Ducsu protest rally and procession demanding cancellation of the decision, Shadik said, “I urge students of all colleges and universities across Bangladesh to build protests and resistance against unjust committee-based recruitment and the committee business.”
He said that the previous system, under which teachers were recommended for appointment through the NTRCA, must be reinstated, and urged the government to withdraw the decision immediately.
“If this decision is not cancelled, we will launch an uncompromising movement with the people of Bangladesh. Just as we took to the streets during the July Uprising, we will take to the streets in an even stronger manner and press home the students’ demands.”
He also announced a mass gathering at 3:00pm tomorrow in front of the Dhaka University Central Library, calling on students of colleges and universities across the country, as well as job seekers, to join the programme.
The Dhaka University unit of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti also staged a protest over the government’s decision, marching from the Central Library and rallying at Madhur Canteen. Leaders warned that scrapping the NTRCA’s recruitment authority would revive corruption and politicisation in schools, as managing committees would appoint teachers based on money and influence rather than merit.
Organising Secretary of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti's DU unit Md Saifullah said the move would force qualified candidates to “go around after a chairman or member with the certificate in one hand and Tk 15-20 lakh in the other,” adding that whoever could pay more would be appointed.
