Another man injured after residents caught the pair during an alleged theft, police say
A man was beaten to death after locals caught and assaulted two people allegedly involved in a theft in Narsingdi’s Raipura early today.
The deceased was identified as Hridoy Mia, 30. Another alleged accomplice, Kamal Mia, 35, was injured in the incident, police said.
The incident took place around 3:00am in the Sachiamara area under Paratali union of Raipura upazila, said Md Mujibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Raipura Police Station.
According to police and locals, Abdul Salam, who works in Saudi Arabia, returned home on leave around 10 days ago. Upon learning that he was back in the country, four members of a gang broke into his house around 3:00am today with the intention of stealing valuables.
Hridoy and Kamal allegedly entered a room of the house, while the other two remained outside. After members of the household raised alarm, neighbours rushed to the spot, caught the two men and beat them, police said.
OC Mujibur said the two men were injured and one of them died on the way to a hospital.
After being taken to Raipura Upazila Health Complex early in the morning, doctors declared Hridoy dead. Kamal was provided treatment at the hospital.
Farzana Akter, emergency medical officer at the health complex, said “Hridoy had died before he was brought to the hospital.”
Police sent his body to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police confirmed that Hridoy was arrested last year in a theft case but escaped from police custody while being taken to jail in handcuffs. Since then, he had remained at large.
Legal proceedings are underway, added the OC.
