Syndicate also demotes three teachers over sexual harassment allegations
Begum Rokeya University (BRUR) has permanently dismissed 11 people, including three teachers, in connection with the killing of student Abu Sayed during the July 2024 uprising.
The decision was made at the 123rd meeting of the university syndicate, its highest policymaking body, on Wednesday. A syndicate member, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the decision to Media yesterday.
The three teachers are Moshiur Rahman, former associate professor of Mathematics; Asaduzzaman Mondol alias Asad, associate professor of Public Administration; and Shariful Islam, associate professor of Political Science and former proctor.
The others dismissed are office assistant-cum-computer operator Mahbubar Rahman alias Babu; then assistant registrar Rafiul Hasan Rasel; assistant registrar Hafizur Rahman alias Tufan; section officer Md Monirujjaman Palash; MLSS Mohammad Nurunnabi Mondol; security guard Nur Alam Mia; MLSS AKM Amir Hossain; and Anwar Parvez Apple, a contractual employee at the proctor’s office.
The move follows a verdict by International Crimes Tribunal-2, which handed prison terms of varying lengths to those accused in the Abu Sayed murder case on April 9. A three-member panel led by Tribunal Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury delivered the verdict.
BRUR Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Showkat Ali said the university had received a copy of the tribunal’s order and placed it before the syndicate.
“Out of respect for Shaheed Abu Sayed and to realise his dreams, those concerned have been permanently dismissed as per the syndicate’s decision,” he said.
Abu Sayed, a student in BRUR’s English department, was shot dead by police in Rangpur on July 16, 2024, during the quota reform movement. His death sparked widespread public outrage across the country.
At the same syndicate meeting, BRUR demoted three teachers by one rank after finding allegations of sexual harassment by students to be true.
The teachers are Prof Md Rashidul Islam of the Statistics department, Md Shamim Hossain of Geography and Environmental Science, and Dr Shakibul Islam of Disaster Management. They were also barred from supervising female students or conducting academic activities alone with them.
